CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

They slept late the next morning, and ate a substantial breakfast in bed, for they were hungry, and, scandalously, stayed there. They dozed a little after breakfast, and when they woke towards noon he lay back and said, ‘I have a question, Kate. I feel that I have recovered my strength, so that your answer to it will not necessarily carry me off – but if I am wrong, so be it. You may put it on my headstone: “Here lies Benedict Silverwood. He asked his bride of two days a question, and her answering of it killed him. He would not have had it any other way.”’

She was sitting propped up on pillows beside him, the sheets at her waist, her unbound hair still spilling wild about her breasts and shoulders. It was very likely true that no lady should ever sit uncovered in such a scandalous, wanton manner, even when alone with her husband, but should instead be modestly clothed at all times. She did not care. She said, ‘I do not understand you. How can a mere response of mine to any question you pose me possibly cause you grave injury?’

He took her right hand, and idly began to trace invisible patterns on it, and on her palm. The light touch was oddly erotic, and she felt the hairs on her arms stand on end, and her nipples tighten beneath their veil of hair.

‘Ah, but you see, your answer will have two parts: a verbal explanation, which I may be able to bear, and something in the nature of a practical demonstration, which might carry any man off before his time, albeit with a smile upon his face, and no regrets.’

She began to understand him, and she felt her lips curve up involuntarily into a smile that, she was almost certain, did not make her appear any more respectable. She was probably a lost cause by now, and if she were not, she would be soon.

‘Last night,’ he said, ‘I very tentatively – afraid that you might be shocked at the suggestion, concerned for your tender sensibilities; I have no idea why you are laughing, Kate – I very tentatively ventured to suggest that you might touch your breasts, and that you might enjoy it. Your quite unexpected response, my lady, led me to believe that it was not the first time you had laid hands on yourself. May I say in passing that you looked utterly magnificent while you were doing it?’

‘You may.’

‘Thank you. And this led me to reflect, while I was pleasuring you with my fingers and watching you, and very much enjoying doing so, that perhaps you have been in the habit of exploring your luscious body and giving yourself pleasure in other ways, with this delicate little hand that I now hold in mine.’ He raised the hand to his lips, and began to kiss it, to bite on the soft pad of her thumb, and then to take each finger in turn into his mouth and suck it.
